Keystone Heights Woman's Club Golf Tournament fundraises $7,000 for scholarships

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – A golfer crouched down to line up his shot. His team huddled behind him, strategizing and mentioning how the putting green slopes down ever so slightly.

The second annual Keystone Heights Woman's Club Scholarship Golf Tournament was in a "scramble" format. Twelve teams of four faced off for prize money, bragging rights and honest fun on a warm, overcast Saturday morning at Keystone Heights Country Club.

After taking a deep breath, the golfer lined up his shot, sunk it in, and high-fives fluttered all around.

The golf fundraiser raised more than $7,000 in scholarships for 12 students from Keystone Heights Junior/Senior High, the real winners of the tournament – especially since the first-place and runner-up teams declined the prize money and instead donated $800 back to the women's club

"It feels pretty good to win. You just have to surround yourself with good people and delegate," said one golfer from the winning team.

"It's all for a good cause," said another.

"The highlight of my game today was the free lunch," said one golfer, referring to the catered barbeque lunch donated by Johnny's Bar-B-Q & Catering.

"It makes our hearts happy the tournament was such a success, especially to have grown so much since last year," said Brooklyn Hayes-Yelin, the president of the club.

According to Hayes-Yelin, the tournament on March 2 attracted 48 golfers and doubled the amount collected last year. She said it was an impressive turnout. Every player spot was sold out, and the golf course easily accommodated the players and festivities.

The scholarship applications will be available next week at the senior and junior high front offices. Scholarships will be awarded based on need, volunteer hours and a personal essay.

Next month, the women’s club is helping organize an inaugural "Mom Prom" on April 13 to raise funds for a new roof for the clubhouse. It will be an event for moms to dress up, socialize and enjoy a night away from pesky husbands and children.
