Although a quick-moving yet strong storm passed over Paul Armstrong Park shortly after more than 150 children gathered for the 11th Cliff Avril Family Fun Day, the majority found cover and spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying an afternoon of food and free activities. As if bounce houses, water slides, climbing walls, face-painting, kickball, foam machine and bungee swings weren’t enough, the wet grass and puddles became another popular option for children. Commissioner Alexandra Compere and Operation Barnabas founder Rylan Heck were one of nearly 30 volunteers for the annual celebration emphasizing family and community values. Avril graduated from Clay High and played linebacker and defensive end at Purdue before he was drafted in the third round by the Detroit Lions. His 12-year career also included a four-year stint with the Seattle Seahawks.
