Second chances lead to first-class fun at Batton Ranch
KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – Batton Family Ranch is a family-owned business that rescues unwanted horses and rehabilitates them.
The ranch opened in January but has given unwanted horses a second chance in life since 2021. In addition, the ranch focuses on encouraging kids to be more engaged with nature and less on their phones.
“I created the ranch as a place where people and horses can come together,” said owner Charles Batton. “I’ve taken horses that no one wants and have given them a second chance at life and a new job.”
Over the years, the ranch has rescued and rehabilitated 20 horses.
“Every horse is different,” Batton said. “A lot of times, we get sick, starving or lame horses that have medical issues.”
Rehabilitation depends on the animal’s condition, but it usually requires nutrients, love, and re-training. After rehabilitation, the animals either remain on the ranch as riding horses or go to new homes.
“I would love people to be more aware of all the horses out there that are languishing away and how these animals are willing to work and partner with people more than any other animal,” he said.
The ranch offers equestrian riding services as a way to encourage children to be outside with nature and animals. Families can learn the basics of horseback riding through interactive lessons. Activities such as flag hunting, horse trails, and timed races are available for individuals to sharpen their riding skills further. In addition, lessons allow children to learn skill sets and values such as communication, problem-solving, kindness and self-confidence. The ranch also offers individual trail rides and special occasions such as birthday parties, social gatherings and events at summer camps. “I think what we can bring to Keystone Heights and the neighboring Clay County community is an opportunity for people to reconnect with animals, the past and really recalibrate their lives back to mankind’s best which is being with animals and being outdoors,” Batton said.
