FLEMING ISLAND – The Paul E. and Klare N. Reinhold Foundation, Inc. held its annual “Celebrate Clay” community service awards ceremony live online last week.
“For 26 years the Reinhold Family has celebrated community service in Clay County at its annual awards program,” said J.F. Bryan IV, Chairman of the Foundation. “Usually, we gather with nearly 250 people for a hot breakfast and the awards ceremony. In response to the coronavirus challenges and in the interest of personal safety and community health, we chose to host this year’s ceremony live online.”
In addition to this year’s format change, also new this year the Reinhold Foundation increased the amount of the total cash awards from $75,000 to $100,000. All 47 award categories saw an increase in cash gifts in 2020.
Clay Behavioral Health Center captured the top honor this year, earning the $15,000 Paul E. Reinhold Community Service Award.
A panel of five judges including three volunteers from the community and two representatives on behalf of the Reinhold Foundation voted on the best projects and volunteers of 2019 to determine the winners of the $100,000 in cash awards. This year’s judges were: Rena Coughlin, CEO, Nonprofit Center of NE FL; Don Fann, CEO, The Way Free Medical Clinic; Jim Kuhn, Retired (Former Vice President and Board Member, Reinhold Corporation); Sharon Lastrapes Myers, Reinhold Family Member; and Pete Sutton, Retired (Former General Manager, Clay County Agricultural Fair).
Applications were open to all nonprofit groups active in the First Coast Area that provided services to Clay County residents in 2019. The 47 winners included Clay County and regionally based nonprofits, churches and school programs.
The winners were:
Paul E. Reinhold Community Service Award ($15,000): Clay Behavioral Health Center;
Judges' Choice Program Awards ($7,000 each): Miriam’s Basket and Safe Animal Shelter;
Extraordinary Executive Director ($7,000): Beth Clark, Executive Director, BASCA;
Peggy Bryan Volunteer of the Year Award ($7,000): Joelle Marquis, Mercy Support Services;
Judges' Choice Volunteer Awards ($3,500 each): Joyce Perchy, BASCA, and Bryce Adams, Special Olympics Florida – Clay County;
Special Judges' Awards ($2,000 each): Clay County 4-H Foundation, Clay County Archives, The Clothes Closet and Food Pantry of Church Women’s Christian Ministries, Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs, Hope Therapy, Kids First of Florida, McRae Elementary School Weekend Food Program, Oakleaf Village Elementary School Music Program, Quigley House and Village Improvement Association GFWC of Green Cove Springs;
Category Awards ($1,000 each): Arts and Culture – CalaVida Arts Festival, Concert on the Green, Jacksonville Children’s Chorus and Orange Park Community Theatre; Civic Programs – Orange Park Jr. High Black History and Diversity Program; Community Programs – Clay County Habitat for Humanity, Magnolia Point Women’s Club Charities, Mercy Support Services, Special Olympics Florida Clay County, Waste Not Want Not and Women’s Empowerment Services of NE Fla.; Education and Literacy – Challenge Enterprises of North Florida, Clay County Education Foundation, Episcopal Children’s Services and Project REACH Kids, Clay Schools; Environment and animal advocacy – CJ Acres Animal Rescue Farm and Clay County Humane Society; Health and Human Services – Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation, Community Hospice & Palliative Care and Soldiers Freedom Outdoors; Senior Citizens’ Programs – National Association of Veterans & Families and Shepherd’s Center of Orange Park; Church Services Programs – Good Samaritan Ministry–Orange Park United Methodist Church, James Boys, The Kitchens of Clay County and Food Bridge–Middleburg United Methodist Church; Accomplishment by Youth – Teen Court of Clay County; and, Service to Youth and Families – AMIKids Clay County, Seamark Ranch and Young Life Clay County.
The Foundation created the “Celebrate Clay” awards program to honor the legacy of Paul and Klare Reinhold and to recognize, reward, and encourage community service within Clay County. The Foundation has awarded $865,000 to Celebrate Clay award recipients in the past 12 years.
