GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Roll out the mats. Yoga classes at the Spring Park Pool Pavilion will be held the next two months, with a free session scheduled for Nov. 13.
The pavilion will host five classes from 10-11 a.m. Nov. 20 through Dec. 18 every Tuesday for $45. Andrea Hernandez of Yoga Den on Fleming Island is teaching the class.
Parks and Recreation Director Glee Glisson said yoga classes is a solid addition to the department’s programming repertoire.
“It’s just the need of the community. It’s a really good mental and physical exercise program for all ages and it’s very beneficial to the well-being of the citizens,” Glisson said. “I thought we needed to offer this.”
The pavilion is currently scheduled to groups on a first-come, first-serve basis but can also be rented out five hours at a time for $400 dollars. Glisson said she expects a solid turnout, with the city offering the free introductory class. Call (904) 375-1162 for more information.
At an October city council meeting, Glisson told council members the addition of yoga, pickleball and improvements to the beach volleyball court, help give residents something to do.
“This yoga class is sponsored by the city and the city is giving usage of the pool pavilion to bring this class in,” Glisson said.
Glisson added that Tai Chi classes would be a part of the city’s Parks and Recreation programming in January with a similar setup to the yoga classes. On Saturday, the Parks and Recreation Department is holding a Tai Chi demonstration 1-2:30 p.m. at the pavilion, taught by Kam P. Lee, of Orange Park’s Kam Lee Center.
