ORANGE PARK – A neighbor’s home video surveillance camera recorded a man breaking into a garage on Jan. 20 and stealing a safe containing firearms.
Mark Steven Mahan, 41, of Jacksonville, was charged with armed robbery after deputies said he broke into his estranged wife’s garage and took items, including her boyfriend’s safe.
The wife found her garage door partially opened. She said boxes were opened and the safe was missing from the garage. She talked with a video surveillance neighbor and recognized the man crawling under the door as her husband. The couple are separated, according to the arrest report. The wife filed for an order of protection on Jan. 18 after deputies were called a day earlier after the wife said she was threatened. According to the arrest report, the order for protection is still pending.
The boyfriend said he had four weapons in the safe. A propane tank and one of the wife’s taillights were also missing. The video showed a Kia, the same kind of car Mahan owns, backing into the driveway. Deputies were able to identify Mahan from the video.
Mahan’s next court date will be on March 4. Until then, he will remain in the Clay County Jail without bond.
