Knight, Marquis overpower Bolles

JACKSONVILLE– Forward Lindsey Knight scored three goals and dominated the loose balls to lead visiting Fleming Island High School to a 9-7 victory over Jacksonville Bolles Friday night.

After splitting eight faceoffs in the first half, Knight worked with faceoff specialist Kierra Marquis to secure possession for the Golden Eagles on seven of 10 second half draws. Marquis would pop the ball backwards toward Knight, who consistently wrestled possession away from a Bulldog standing with her on the faceoff circle.

“She was excellent,” Golden Eagles coach Clint Lyons said of Knight. “She kept winning draws, and if you win most of the draws, it gives you a good shot at winning.”

Fleming Island needed the extra possessions, for although they outshot the Bulldogs 28-15, goaltender Marla Saikali kept Bolles close with 12 saves. The Golden Eagles needed Knight’s scoring as well, since leading scorer Kierra Marquis was held to two goals by a Bolles defense that shadowed her even when she did not have the ball. Knight scored two early goals to stake Fleming Island to a 3-1 lead, and earned her hat trick in the third quarter on a low shot past Saikali.

Knight’s final goal extended the visitors’ lead to 7-4, but the Golden Eagles turned to Marquis for the game’s most critical goal. After Marcela Weret curled around the back of the goal and beat Fleming Island goaltender Megan Wickes from close range to bring the Bulldogs within 8-7, Marquis went high with a penalty shot that sailed over Saikali’s shoulder and into the net to push Fleming Island’s lead back to two goals. Marquis had bounced a shot over the goal on her initial rush, but was given a second chance when the Bulldogs were called for being in her shooting space. The senior combined with Knight to win the faceoff following the goal, and the Golden Eagles maintained possession for the final 3:07.

Wickes, a freshman forced to start in the crease due to an injury to starting goaltender Patricia Volz, made a significant contribution with six saves.

“She made a few saves, and that’s all we can really ask for,” said Lyons.

Karina Ortiz scored twice for the Golden Eagles, who improve to 5-5 with their third consecutive victory over the Bulldogs. Mackenzie Phillips had Fleming Island’s other goal.
