‘The Greatest Piano Men’ perform at Thrasher-Horne

ORANGE PARK – They promised to come to town and help us party down, and that’s exactly what Grand Funk did in a 14-song set last Saturday night at the Thrasher-Horne Center.

With two of three original members – drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher – still rocking, the group from Flint, Michigan, tore through their repertoire of classic hits with the same kind of energy that made them one of my favorite bands during the 1970s.

Brewer led the band on stage and saluted the crowd before taking a seat behind his drums. A moment later, guitarists Mark Chatfield and Max Carl got the concert started with “Rock ‘n Roll Soul.”

The 10^th song brought everyone to their feet when the band played “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Very few sat down after that as they went into a much calmer take of their psychedelic hit “Inside Looking Out.” From there, they finished with “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)” and “We’re an American Band.” The crowd got loud and knew every word when they got a chance to sing a portion of “Some Kind of Wonderful.”

One fan said, “It’s always a blast when you see that the band is having as much fun as the crowd!”

Indeed.
