GAINESVILLE - Fleming Island High senior golfer Cambree Hodge shot an 18-hole par round at the Jill Darr Invitational at Hawkstone Country Club in Gainesville and led her Golden Eagles team to a first-time first-place finish in the event featuring a handful of state tournament finishers.

Hodge, who was third behind a winning 67 score from Katelyn Huber, a junior of P.K. Yonge who was 10th in Class 1A last year, and a runner-up score of 68 from Class 3A runnerup Brayndn Smith, a senior at host Buchholz, got team points' help from senior teammate Kalia Polete who finished strong with a 74 (2-over) score for seventh place with three golfers tied in fourth place with 73 scores.

Fleming Island won with a 307 total score over Columbia (335), sixth in Class 2A last year, and Buchholz (348), 13th in 3A last year just three strokes behind Fleming Island's 12th place finish.

Hodge punched in with four par scores to open her round but slipped with two bogies to finish with a 38 (2-over par) after nine holes.

Polete nearly kept pace with Hodge with a 39 (3-over) with a double bogie on six with seven pars.

Both golfers powered through the second nine with Hodge opening with a birdie on 10, five pars and a birdie on 16 and 17. A bogie on 18 kept her score at 34 (2-under) for the back nine for her final 72 (even).

Polete answered also with a birdie on 10 and 17 with six pars and a  bogie on 12 to finish with a 35 on the back nine.

Huber opened with a 37 score on her first nine but scorched the final nine with a 30 (6-under) round of nine with four birdies and an eagle on 17 to finish.

Smith parred her first seven holes with two birdies to finish with a 34, but could not improve on the final nine with a second 34 score with just three birdies and a bogie.

Fleming Island's next three finishers included a solid round of 79 from freshman Shayla Abbas with junior Chloe Blanc at 82 and junior Kathryn McNeill finished at 95.

St. Johns Country Day School junior Addy Vogt finished as an individual competitor at fourth at 73 (1-over) with two other golfers.

Jill Darr Rowell, who died in 2010 at age 37 of leukemia, was a University of South Carolina golfer from 1992-1995 after graduating from Buchholz High School.

The Golden Eagles boys' golf team finished up the regular season at home on the back nine, par 35 at FIGC with a convincing win over Atlantic Coast, 155-172. Senior Elliot Mehler, playing his final regular season match, and Junior Chase Ricks led the team with each scoring 2-over par 37's. Sophomore Alex Blom followed up with a 40 along with Sophomore Eli Lewis fired a 41. Sophomores Ben Carlton(47), who carded his first birdie of his career in high school play, and Nathan Bozeman(51) also played but didn't figure into the scoring. The win puts the team at 11-0 in head-to-head stroke play matches and tournaments, and 63-0 in teams defeated.
