There’s an old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Actually, words can hurt. But they can also move the needle for good!

There is immense power in your words. They can hurt just as quickly as they can heal. Always think and pray before speaking: God will help to guide you in wielding the power of your words effectively and in a way that will encourage both you and others.

Sadly, this is not the way the world around us works so it will take some effort to change our mindset. Society and the culture throw around words carelessly and recklessly, many times causing great damage. Proverbs 12:18 says, ”There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

We should always carefully choose the words we speak. When we speak words of life, it helps us see the fullness of what is created within us and others. In fact, the scripture says our words carry the power of death and life. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

If we speak evil things, if we tell lies, and other types of negative speech, we are bringing ourselves down in every way. We can damage relationships, shame our character and reputation, and burn bridges of opportunity for our future. 1 Peter 3:10 says, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.”

Wise, loving, and empowering words can make a positive difference where they are spoken. Proverbs 20:15 says, “Wise words are more valuable than much gold and many rubies.” Why is that? Because wise words benefit our lives in every way. They build deep and powerful relationships; they bring us godly character; and they create opportunities unlike anything we’ve experienced before.

So, let’s be extremely mindful of the words we speak. Remember, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1.

Ask God to help you recognize unhealthy patterns of speech. Then let’s take action! Correct and improve the way we speak to others and see what a difference it makes.
