FLEMING ISLAND – Boosted by the return of junior middle hitter Rayna Durden, the Fleming Island High volleyball team took care of two Clay County rivals in strong fashion with a 4-1 win over Fleming Island on opening night and a 3-0 win over Clay two days later.
Fleming Island coach Amy Walker has a front line of Durden, senior Lyara Rosario and sophomore Jasmine Robinson, plus senior Madison Mas to take care of business up front with returning libero Jangelyz Ramirez handling the back line duties.
Durden had 20 scoring shots against Middleburg with eight against Clay in shortened net time as Walker installed other players against the Blue Devils.
both games, Durden had three blocked shots.
Against Middleburg, won 25-23, 25-17, 25-27 and 25-14, Durden got opposite firepower from Bronco senior Mallory Roney who answered with 11 kills of her own.
Against Clay, won with games of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-14, Durden led the Golden Eagles with eight kills with Rosario at five and Mas and Robinson at four apiece.
Fleming Island has a district match with Gainesville Buchholz set for August 28 with Creekside, Bartram Trail and Oakleaf following; all district foes. Buchholz (1-1) has a 3-2 win over Trinity Catholic and a 3-2 loss over Ocala Forest.
