PONTE VEDRA - Middleburg High defending state wrestling champion Cheyenne Cruce continued her reign while Oakleaf's Kailani "KK" Barrientos and Jazmine Moore registered five pins in six matches combined on their way to titles at the Ponte Vedra High School Own the Ocean PV Girls Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.
Middleburg finished third behind team champion Freedom, second to Matanzas at last year's state championships with Middleburg tied for fifth, who scored 159 points and South Dade with 150 as the Broncos scored 98.0 points. Oakleaf, with just five wrestlers, took sixth with 78 points.
"The girl's numbers increased a lot from last year to this year," said Middleburg coach Jamie Harrison. "The girls around the county are a mix of returners and new faces and they will all learn the ins and outs as the season progresses, but the foundations are solid. Clay County will be well represented at the end of the season."
Also, Fleming Island and Clay had one athlete each competing; Auryanna Phelps at 135 who finished 2-2 for the Golden Eagles Vasheer Burke for Clay at 100 who also finished 2-2. Burke made it to her semifinal but lost to Sayuri Caceres of Lincoln, the 100-pound runner-up.
Middleburg's points came from Cruce as the lone individual champion plus a second to Skyla Fisher at 105, a fourth to Memphis Moses at 115 and a third to Sarah Walsh at 120. Cruce, Moses and Fisher were state qualifiers last year.
Oakleaf got fourths from Jayla Harrison at 170 and Jazmine Soto at 105. Harrison was third at 170 at state last year.
