Both Middleburg and Fleming Island highs had astounding sports performances last weekend with the Lady Broncos, pictured, winning the Class 5A title in Winter Haven with a dominating 3-0 win over Barron Collier High. Just an hour or so north, Fleming Island's boys golf team was winning their first team title and the first team golf title in Clay County history behind the front-running play of sophomore Tyler Mawhinney, who scorched the Mission Inn Resort Golf Course in Howie-in-the-Hills to win the individual state title as well. Just an hour west, in Ocala, Fleming Island senior swim freestyle sprinter Maryn McDade was winning her third straight 50 freestyle state title while finally capturing her first 100 freestyle state title. Also for Fleming Island girls golf, the Lady Golden Eagles bettered last year's 12th place finish with a sixth place finish behind strong rounds from seniors Cambree Hodge and Kalia Polete, while Fleming Island junior diver Ava Brinkman, the defending 3A champion, finished second by a minuscule 0.95 points.

For the Broncos, first-year volleyball coach Forkum took the reins from iconic coach Carrie Prewitt and her four decades of leading the Lady Broncos – six Final Fours, two finals, but no titles – to the gold medal ceremony with a strong upfront presence from senior Connor Rahn, a University of Tampa commit, who smashed for 25 scoring strikes in a battle with one of the best hitters in the state.
