GAINESVILLE – Sophomore Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island and junior Mi Li of The First Academy have been named the 2023 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Golf and Miss Golf in a vote of the state’s district golf chairmen.

Florida Atlantic High coach Cherene Castillo and Fleming Island coach Bruce Cloud were named girls’ and boys’ Golf Coaches-of-the-Year after leading their teams to state championships.

Cloud was named Boys’ Coach-of-the-Year after leading his Fleming Island squad to its first state title, winning the Class 3A state championship by 17 strokes over Lakewood Ranch with a 7-over-par score of 583. Mickey Leapley of Ponte Vedra (2A) who led his school to its seventh straight team title and Toby Harbeck of The Benjamin School (1A), which won its first state title since 2009, were named Coaches-of-the-Year in the other boys’ classifications.

Mawhinney, with a hole in one on his first round, led his team to the Class 3A team title with a 4-under par score of 140, the low score among all three classes, to win the individual championship.

Li repeated as Miss Golf after winning the Class 1A girls’ state championship for the second straight year, shooting an 8-under par score of 136 over 36 holes, the lowest score among all competitors in the three classifications.

The other girls’ finalists were Darby Hancock, a junior from Lakeland Kathleen, who won the Class 3A state title and Katherine Schaefer, a senior from American Heritage, who captured the Class 2A state title. On the boys’ side, Loranzo Rodriguez Jr., a junior from Belen Jesuit who was the Class 2A state champ, and Alexander Weinberg, a junior from Pine Crest, who won the Class 1A state title, were the other finalists for Mr. Golf.

Castillo led FAU to its first state title with a 2-over par score of 578, good for a seven-stroke victory over 2022 champion The First Academy. Dennis Burchill of 3A state champion Lake Mary, which won its third straight title, and McKenzie Parks of 2A state champion Beachside were named girls’ Coaches-of-the-Year in their classifications.

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers' commitment to the state's youth. This marks the 32nd year of these unique awards as we honor the state's top athletes and coaches in all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
