GREEN COVE SPRINGS - The Clay High girl's basketball squad, led by 10 points apiece from Teaghan Moses and Aiyana Haynes, used an exciting first-quarter run putting up eight unanswered points, while keeping a defensive blanket in place to pull ahead of the visiting Baldwin Indians and never looking back, keeping the foot on the accelerator for a 45-21 win Friday night. The win hands the Indians their fourth consecutive loss as the Lady Blue Devils move to 3-2 in the early winter season.

“As far as this season goes, we’ve already matched our win total from a year ago,” said an elated Doug Deters, Lady Blue Devils Head Coach. “Our goal is to be the most improved team in Clay County. I thought we took a lot of good steps tonight to get to 3-2 which will help us with the next few games we have. We are starting to hit our stride with a lot of home games and a lot of winnable games to bring that total up as far as we can.”

The "Stride" Deters referred to was a balance of 10 or more points in each quarter along with some outstanding defensive play which held the Indians to a total of seven points in the entire second half.

After Baldwin's mistakes pushed the Blue Devil lead out to 17-11, Moses went to the corner to put up a three-pointer which lit her team on fire. The Lady Blue Devils would put up five more points going into the halftime break with a 25-14 score and a mountain of momentum.

“Our offensive key to the game was to drive hard to the basket and get them to foul us,” said Teaghan Moses on her effort on the win. Moses drew three fouls on the evening earning four of her 10 points from the line.

The third and fourth quarters were defensive clinics.

Julia Weaver was a beast inside the paint coming down with the rebounds to set up Moses and Haynes on their drives. “Watching our fouls, staying up, making sure we weren’t too aggressive were the keys to our defense,” said Weaver. “They are always going to push, and we have to push back. You just have to make sure you are clear about it.”
