Celebrating Arbor Day at Green Cove Springs

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – There was a special significance to the city’s Arbor Day ceremony last Friday as city employees, members of the Garden Club of Green Cove Springs and the family of former mayor Jerry Knight Williams planted a tree in her memory in front of City Hall. Williams became the first woman mayor in 1986, opposing plans to turn Spring Park into a commercial development. The park was spared and remains the popular focal point that attracts thousands yearly. Three years later, Green Cove Springs was designated to the Tree City USA program list. Williams’ daughter-in-law Susan, son Larry and grandson Stuart were part of the ceremony.
