MIDDLEBURG – Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a man hiding in a field behind Mercy Support Services on Jan. 21 after he led deputies on a chase in a stolen SUV that ended after he ran into two cars.

Caleb Alexander Washington, 20, Middleburg, was charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement with intent to commit a felony, grand theft auto, possession of an unlicensed firearm, resisting arrest, attempting to flee from law enforcement and several traffic citations after a deputy spotted a Ford Explorer that reported stolen at a gas station on the corner of Blanding Boulevard and Henley Road. When the deputy’s backup arrived, the driver, later identified as Washington, took off.

According to the arrest report, Washington ran into at least two cars, including one at the corner of Blanding and Knight Boxx Road. Washington fled on foot and was caught hiding behind Mercy. Deputies found a loaded handgun in his backpack.

Washington’s bond was set at $190,014.
