HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS - Middleburg High freshman golfer Chase Carroll chased down his big brother Cody's legacy with his first state meet invite last week at the Class 2A championship tournament at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey in the Hills.

"I didn't get his title, but I did make the state meet as a freshman," said Carroll, noting brother Cody was a three-time state meet golfer with his state title. "I really had one disastrous hole and played well before and after it, I think."

For Carroll, his round one of two was looking to be a successful chase of the Class 2A crown that Cody won three years ago, but round two would prove fateful and end the dream.

Carroll finished 25th for the individual scoring after throwing down a third place 3-over par first round that included a first nine hole score of 4-over par 39 with three bogies and six pars.

From there, Carroll turned on the jets and scorched the back nine holes for a one-under par 36 and a final score of 75 (3-over par) that got him tied for third overall with three golfers tied for first, four for second and five for third including Carroll.

In round two, the first nine holes was disastrous with two opening pars, a bogie, a triple bogie and a third bogie hampering any shot at chasing the leaders down.

"That fourth hole killed me," said Carroll. "I hit a tree, it bounced way off the cart path and then I lined up to thread the needle between two trees to get back to the fairway and my backswing hit a branch and we lost the ball."

Carroll finished that first nine with a 8-over par 44 score and little room to spare if he was to chase down a title.

In the back nine, Carroll regrouped after a bogie and double bogie on 10 and 11, but then strung out six pars and an 18th hole birdie to finish just two over for the final nine holes.

"It took me a couple of holes to regroup and get back to my game," said Carroll. "It was a tougher course the second round and the holes were all in different, more difficult spots on the greens."

Carroll's second round would finish at 11-over 83 to bring his two-round finish at 158 (14-over); tied for 25th with three other golfers.

Individual champion Jason Duff of Menendez, the region champion ahead of Carroll's third place region finish, won at 145 with rounds of 76 and 69. Duff was in fourth place after round one.

"Jason had a nice finish," said Carroll.

Ponte Vedra won the team title ahead of American Heritage (Plantation) and Bishop Moore Catholic.
