Battle on the Island: Raiders bounced, rebound with two wins

ORANGE PARK - Orange Park High basketball coach Derek Kurnitsky pondered out loud at the halftime break of his eventual blowout win over Auburndale.

"Where was this team yesterday?" pondered Kurnitsky, who saw his team lose his first game; 53-48 to Bolles, of the Battle on the Island tournament sponsored by Fleming Island High School, but with games in the Orange Park Raiderdome due to the size of the field. "We showed we could be resilient and come back to play strong after a loss. I like that."

Orange Park showed some versatility in their lineup with new faces taking on lead positions for scoring and rebounding.

Against Baker County, game two, a 53-52 win, the Raiders got 12 points from Quayshon Blot.

With 6:10 to go, the score was at 43-42 with Orange Park up and Baker County making a strong surge to take the lead with a layup at 6:00 taking the lead. Orange Park retook the lead on a Johnnie Johnson follow-up rebound to layup.

With the score knotted at 50-50 with 1:05 to go, an inbounds steal by Terrance Tuggles turned into two free throws to put Orange Park up by two.

Baker County center Jeremiah Mitchell hit a jumper in the lane to tie the game one more time with 12 seconds left.

Orange Park senior guard Archieve Triggs III got fouled under the Raider basket for a throw-in on the baseline and then hit a layup but the basket came after a foul putting Triggs in position to take the lead off the free throw line; missing the first, but winning on the second with 2.6 seconds on the clock.

Against Auburndale, with Keion Brown hitting two of his five three-pointers on his first two shots of the fourth quarter, Orange Park cruised through a 34-12 first half to push to 45-16 en route to a 63-38 win. Brown finished with 19 points with Triggs adding 14.

"We needed that Auburndale win, we've been struggling," said Kurnitsky. "Baker County came out firing after our tough loss to Bolles the night before and we had to wake up. We could use this momentum for after the break."
