FLEMING ISLAND – The Barco-Newton Family YMCA will host a Triathlon on March 1 to support the Safety Around Water initiative.
The event is the brainchild of Delraye Norris, who works with aquatics at the Barco-Newton branch and Ellie Wainwright, who works in running and biking wellness programs.
The Safety Around Water initiative’s goal is to provide swim safety skills for children in the community.
“Mainly, we are focusing on the school-age group,” said Norris. “Just getting them the basic skills helping prevent future incidents. Teaching them you shouldn’t be around water by yourself, that means asking for that permission.
“Also, we go over basics too; if they were to fall in, knowing how to get to safety. Or knowing if they get too tired how to flip and float on their back until they regain some energy to get to safety or whatever the case may be. Those are the core fundamentals of the Safety Around Water program.”
The participant’s score in the triathlon is based on the furthest distance covered in a set amount of time. Team members must complete all three events – run, bike and swim. The swim event will last 10 minutes in a 25-yard pool. The goal will be to do as many lengths of the pool possible. The second event is a 30-minute ride on a stationary bike, followed by a 20-minute run on the treadmill.
As a team, there can be three members; one member may compete in each event.
Registration may be done as a team or individually.
The registration fee before Feb. 23 is $35 for each individual and $50 a team. Registration can be completed online and on-site. Between Feb. 23-29, the fees will increase to $45 an individual and $55 a team. On March 1, it will cost $45 an individual and $60 a team.
“It’s just another way of giving back to our community,” said Norris. “The swim safety skills for the children so they can have access, no matter what, to that instruction.”
Prizes will be given by age group and gender. There will be first, second and third places awards.
Volunteers will record the total distances covered across the three events. The totals will be tallied and the winners will be announced on March 4.
