PONTE VEDRA BEACH – Two local golf graduates; Middleburg High’s Cody Carroll and Clay High’s Corey Carlson, brought their golf game to Ponte Vedra’s Sawgrass-Dye Course for a two-day tournament; the Sea Best College Invitational, on Feb. 4-5. Carroll, now a freshman at University of North Florida, and Carlson, a junior at Florida State University, joined teams from 14 colleges from around the country including University of Florida, University of North Carolina, East Carolina University and host Jacksonville University in the three-round event. Nine of the scheduled teams are in the top 50 rankings of Golfstats rankings. After day one, two rounds of play, Carlson’s Seminoles were in fifth place behind leader Florida with Carlson the number two score for FSU, ranked 39th nationally, with a two-round total of 140 (70,70). Carlson is tied for 17th with the leader at 133; Joseph Carrette of Jacksonville University. Carlson has played in two NCAA championship tournaments for the Seminoles.
For UNF, ranked 23rd nationally, Carroll, a state champion in Class 2A for Middleburg, finished his two rounds with a 147 total (77, 70) to finish tied for 47th overall and fifth best for the Ospreys.
Golfing continued on Tuesday with a final 18-hole round.
