Pig race for fun, not to be on menu at Swine and Dine
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Piglets on one side of the Cattleman’s Arena at the Clay County Fairgrounds squealed in anticipation of running a lap around the track, knowing there was a treat waiting for them at the finish line. Others weren’t as lucky because they were on the menu at the Swine and Dine to benefit three local nonprofits. The event included a dinner, games, pig races, a photo opportunity, a Derby hat contest, live music and a petting zoo. Sponsored by the Rotary Clubs in Green Cove Springs and Fleming Island, the outing supported The Way Free Medical Care and Dental, the Quigley House and Mercy Support Services. Hosted by a pig-nosed master of ceremonies, Steve Conrad of the Fleming Island club, the event attracted about 350 guests. “Our online numbers were down a bit, but we had more walk-ups and more sponsors,” said event coordinator Preston Mangus. “It was certainly a success. Everyone had a great time, and the pig races were hilarious.”
