GAINESVILLE – Congressman Ted S. Yoho (R-FL) is proud to announce that the following students from Clay County have received nominations to our prestigious United States service academies:
• Trystan Dodge Ayers: United States Naval Academy / United States Air Force Academy.
• Jordan Mae Detwiler: United States Naval Academy / United States Air Force Academy.
• Landon Thomas Opp: United States Naval Academy.
“These accomplished, hard-working students have proven they are well-equipped for the rigorous curriculum of the United States service academies, “Yoho said. “I am confident these candidates will serve as distinguished members of the United States military upon graduation.”
The United States Naval Academy, located in Annapolis, Maryland, is our nation’s premier school for talented individuals to become officers in the United States Navy. Acceptance into the USNA is no small feat, with the institution accepting only around 9% of applicants each year. The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, supplies our nation’s Air Force with the best and brightest to fly, fight and win in the air, space and cyberspace. USAFA has a low acceptance rate of around 12.3%.
“It is an honor to be accepted by these prestigious institutions, and the nominees from Clay County should be extremely proud.” Yoho concluded, “Again, I congratulate these fine nominees on their admission to this nation’s prestigious services academies. Our office is honored to have nominated such qualified individuals, and it is an honor to serve as their Representative in Congress.”
Trystan Dodge Ayers is a talented leader, student athlete, and community volunteer. Ayers was the student government class president his senior year as well as secretary and treasurer of the National Honors Society at Fleming Island High. He also is a determined athlete, playing varsity soccer, football and track. As an active member of the community, Ayers volunteered at the Clay County soccer club, at school and his church. These traits of leadership, physical fitness, determination and selflessness all make Trystan Ayers a great fit for a prestigious career in the United States Navy or the United States Air Force.
Detwiler is an academically gifted individual and is a member of the prestigious Cambridge AICE (Advance International Certificate of Education) program at Fleming Island. Detwiler also is a notable athlete, playing varsity volleyball, cross country and track. She also served as class president in ninth and 10th grade. Jordan Detwiler demonstrates the necessary traits of leadership, courage and athleticism that make her an excellent fit for the U.S. Navy or the U.S. Air Force.
Opp also is enrolled in the AICE program at Fleming Island. As one of the Top 10 of his class of 519 seniors, he exhibits the characteristic of being academically minded. Opp also balanced an athletic career along with his education, playing varsity cross country, track and soccer. Along with his time spent with sports, he utilized his spare time by giving back to his community. He worked as a volunteer for Christ’s Church Youth Group and the Clay County Soccer Club. The ability to act with altruism in the service of his community, along with his promising academic and athletic careers demonstrate his capability as a nominee for the USNA.
