Keystone Heights BYE
Keystone Heights rebounded from district loss to Bradford with 49-0 blowout of Umatilla. Keystone Heights returns to action September 28 with a home game against unbeaten 1A-Hawthorne with wins of 69-0, 60-0, 51-19 and 60-0.
“They (Hawthorne) are always very athletic and like to score fast,” said Keystone Heights coach Chuck Dickinson. “Our best bet is to control the ball and not let them stay on the field. With the bye week, we get a chance to rest up for that one.”
Indians lead rusher Nick Channell again topped the rush stats with 152 yards on 12 carries against Umatilla with one score. Channell had a 61 yard run that led to a two yard score from teammate Ty Friedlin.
“We only punted once and ran for over 400 yards,” said Dickinson. “Defensively, we controlled the line of scrimmage.”
Friedlin also pounded for 149 yards on 10 carries with four of them for scores; one a 40 yarder.
Sophomore Sterling Roberts added 45 yards of rushing with a score and a 40 yard long run.
Sophomore tailback Kaleb Vojnovski returned to the lineup for the first time sine an injury and added 64 yards on four carries with a 30 yarder his longest.
“Kaleb played some defense last week and is getting back into running shape and that will help our backfield,” said Dickinson.
Umatilla remains winless at 0-4.
Orange Park at Middleburg (OPHS 23, MHS 12)
Orange Park gets a big win over district 5-5A stalwart Clay High and will keep moving toward a showdown with someone in that district later this season. Middleburg (1-2) returned to the win column against Englewood (1-3) in big numbers with 37-7 district 4-6A win Friday night.
Bronco coach Karl Smeltzer liked his team’s effort against Englewood and saw a spark of sorts for the rest of the season.
“Look at who we opened our season with and I think the little bit of success we had may have turned things around for them,” said Smeltzer. “We got beat up pretty good from Menendez, Fleming Island and Clay and we are very young. I think I saw something click against Englewood.”
Against Englewood, quarterback Joe Justino passed for two scores and ran for one with running back Tyler Bryant running for two more scores. Bryant finished with 90 rushing yards with Justino passing for 136 yards.
Trevor Todd caught one score on a slant after a nifty punt return by wideout Anthony Havens that went 60 yards to the Ram five yard line. From there, Justino hit Todd for the score.
A reverse from Justino to Laron Bryant went 58 yards to set up another score.
“We were able to drive the ball downfield most of the night,” said Smeltzer. “A couple of big plays and we were in control.”
The Bronco defense got five sacks with Devin Moody and Trevor Shearin getting two and defensive end Noah Janda getting the fifth. Shearin also got an interception on a diving snag of a Ram pass.
