DELRAY BEACH – Fleming Island High junior tennis player Logan Zapp won the USTA 16 year old National Clay Court Tennis Championships in overwhelming fashion in Delray Beach after a week of competition. The final match was Mon., July 22. Zapp also was a team member of the winning doubles title.

Zapp, 16, was the lead player for the region champion Fleming Island High boys tennis team; a 4-3 win over Lake Mary, but a 4-1 loser in their round one state tournament match against George Steinbrenner High School. Zapp was the lone win for the Golden Eagles against Steinbrenner, the eventual runnerup to Miami Palmetto. Zapp was Class 4A overall singles runnerup via a 6-4, 6-4 match with Daniel Krulig of Coral Gables.

In Delray Beach, Zapp, the fourth seed in Boys 16 Singles, advanced with a first round bye, a 6-3, 6-0 second round win over Benjamin Letzer of Kalamazoo, MI, before surviving a round of 32 match against William Pak of Chantilly, VA, who pushed Zapp to a 7-6 match won by Zapp followed by a dominating 6-1 Zapp win for the match. In the round of 16, Zapp won 6-4, 6-1 over Kieran Foster, the 17th seed out of White Plain, NY. In the championship bracket, Zapp beat Andrew Chang, the 33rd seed out of Trophy Club, TX and the Texas top-ranked player, 64-7-5 to advance to the semifinal against Aidan Mayo of Torrance, CA. Zapp again found a rough go in the first set, a 7-6 win, before blasting a 6-1 second set for the win to the final.

In the final, against second seed Ryan Fishback of Geneva, NY, who also survived a close 7-6 game in his semifinal. Zapp, ranked 12th on the RPI List, a top 100 players tennis rankings nationwide, rolled Fishback 6-0, 6-2 for the title. Fishbank is ranked fourth on the RPI List.

In the doubles championships, Zapp and Alexander Bernard of Bonita Springs, combined to win that title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over third seeds Jeremie Casabon of Flourtown, PA, and Hunter Heck of Saint Paul, MN. Bernard lost to Fishback in round of 16 play in the individual tournament.
