• When Karen Helseth picked up groceries at Waste Not Want Not she was honored with a bouquet of balloons as the nonprofit organization celebrated giving away one million pounds of food to needy residents.
• Clay County high schools all score well on the FCATS test with no school scoring worse than a B.
• Fleming Island librarian Paul Clark earns the “I Love My Librarian” award, $5,000 and a trip to New York from the Carnegie Corporation.

20 years ago, 2000

• Newly elected Christie Fitzgerald joined incumbents Larry Lancaster and George Bush in a swearing in ceremony for the Clay County Board of County Commissioners.
• Green Cove Springs plans to enforce strict enforcement of the way city buildings are numbered.
• Joyce Alford, Director of Student Services for the Clay County School District, was selected by the Florida Association of School Psychologists and Administrator of the Year.

30 years ago, 1990

• Clarence Brooks is given a life sentence after a jury convicts him of two counts of grand theft and one count each of armed robbery and attempted robbery.
• There were 41 entries on display during the Green Cove Springs Christmas parade.
• The just-completed census indicates a reappointment of congressional districts may include a new district that includes Clay County.

• A grand jury decides William Roger Ziegler acted in self defense when he killed businessman Willie James Plummer.
