The Clay County School Board accepts the resignation of attorney Bruce Bickner.

An Orange Park family accepts a $2.2 million settlement after Daniel Linsinbigler Jr., 19, died in the Clay County Jail after being pepper-sprayed, hooded and restrained to a chair.

Hundreds are served at the 13th annual Empty Bowls Luncheon at Orange Park United Methodist Church to benefit the Salvation Army Women’s Auxillary.

10 years ago, 2009

Molly Hatchet headlines a benefit for Somer Thompson, a 7-year-old girl who was murdered a month earlier in Orange Park. The song list included “Flying on the Wings of Angels,” a song written for Somer.

The Clay County School Board considers a plan to redirect hundreds of students to different schools as part of a redistricting plan.

Jean Cocco, Megan Wright and Marge Garey all were selected as Volunteers of the Year by the Clay County School District.

Employees at RGC Mineral Sands (now known as Iluka Resources) are close to ending a 15-month strike after a National Labor Relations Board judge rules the company was in violation of labor laws.

Bhide & Hall Architects reveal plans for a new public safety building for Orange Park during a meeting of the General Services and Recreation Committee.

30 years ago, 1989


Clay County representatives go to Tallahassee to press the state legislature for inclusion of the Branan Field-Chaffee link as an alternative to Blanding Boulevard.

Green Cove Springs City Council votes to move up its plan to build a new wastewater treatment plant, with construction set to being in 1993.

The Kitty Wells Show, with Johnny and Bobby Wright, perform at Clay High. The show was sponsored by VFW Post 1988.


40 years ago, 1989

Ralph Kerr of Green Cove Springs was selected as the top recruit of his 80-man training unit at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Orlando.

Animal Control officer Tony Ingle will report to James Calett, the planning and zoning director, following a vote of the Board of County Commissioners.

The Clay Coalition meets with residents of Green Cove Springs in an effort to block JEA’s plan to build a coal-fired generator in Clay County.
