The Fraternal Order of Police and Sheriff Rick Beseler unveiled the county’s first-ever memorial honoring fallen police officers to be built at sheriff’s office headquarters.

School Superintendent Ben Wortham named Deborah Segreto the new principal at Ridgeview High and Sarah Lawson to be the new principal at Lake Asbury Elementary.

A methamphetamine raid in the Tanglewood area south of Orange Park ended in five arrests for manufacturing meth with a child present, while Jessica Pagano of Orange Park was charged with child neglect and other charges.

Clay County Sheriff’s deputies had to shoot and kill two male pit bulls that had attacked and killed their owner, Tina Marie Canterbury, 42, of Middleburg.

The Florida Highway Patrol charged Andrew Strizic, 22, of Orange Park, with vehicular homicide for the death of Jessie Williams, 94 of Orange Park. Police said Strizic lost control of his car and spun into the path of Williams’ vehicle.

The nationally-syndicated show “America’s Most Wanted” featured a segment on the murders of Matthew Brumbaugh, 21, and Chelsea Rohn, 16, who were roommates at 1723 Jean Court in Doctors Inlet when they were found dead in April 2007.

Orange Park area resident, 14-year-old John Raul Micheliche, was charged with attempted murder after shooting his 15-year-old sister with a .22-caliber automatic handgun he’d retrieved from his mother’s locked box.

After pulling a gun on a shopper outside of JC Penney at the Orange Park Mall and eluding Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies, John Averal, 16, of Jacksonville, was charged with robbery.

A team of auditors from DuVal, Horne & Co. descended on the Clay County Clerk of Court office to conduct an audit of financial records dating back to 1992.

Orange Park council members Carrol Nix and Dennis Frick voted against the town’s $4.3 million budget, which included $58,000 to hire three police officers. Nix said his no vote was in opposition of having to use reserve funds to balance the budget.

St. Johns River Community College announced a November groundbreaking for its College Drive campus, which was operating out of six portable buildings.

Clay County School District officials said needed improvements to district schools could run as high as $76 million.

Riding horseback, Clay County Sheriff Jennings Murrhee led a mounted posse to open up the horse show held in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Florida Sheriff’s Boy’s Ranch near Live Oak.

The Clay County School District announced plans to build a new high school on a 53-acre tract near the intersection of State Roads 200 and 21. Plans called for the $6.5 million, 210,000 square foot school to be ready by late February 1978.

County Commission Chairman Hank Bruning signed a resolution proclaiming October 208 as “National 4-H Week.”
