• Former Clay County and Green Cove Springs City Clerk F. Lee Bentley dies after a bout with prostate cancer.

20 years ago, 2005

• An undercover operation at area spas and tanning salons by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office results in the arrest of six for prostitution.

• The Black Creek District of the Boy Scouts of America celebrate 34 new Eagle Scouts who earned the organization’s highest honor at a dinner and banquet at the Orange Park United Methodist Church.

• Judge William Wilkes sentenced Timothy Oberlander to 40 years in prison for abducting a girl from a bus stop in February 2022.

30 years ago, 1995

• A group of 16 students from Russia and Germany met with students from Ridgeview and Middleburg highs as part of a cultural exchange program of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Program.

• Heeding the will of a recent straw vote, the Board of County Commissioners defined parameters establishing the legal wording of a countywide curfew ordinance for juveniles.

• Green Cove Spring City Council member Sandra Dunnavant wrote a resignation letter to Mayor Jim Loner, but did not give him a reason for leaving the council.

40 years ago, 1985

• Clay County officials celebrated adding Advanced Life Support at the Meadowbrook-Bellair Volunteer Fire Department.

• Clay Theatre in Green Cove Springs advertised the film “Star Man” starring Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen while billing itself as a “quiet relaxed atmosphere for adults serving beer and wine.”

• Officials at the Clay County Courthouse honored Wilhemina “Mimi” Dixon for her 26 years of service to judges in the Fourth Judicial Circuit. She retired as secretary to Judge Lamar Winegeart.
