• A police chase on Blanding Boulevard, over the Doctors Lake bride, back into Orange Park and ended with a Jacksonville man in custody and at least four crashed cars during rush hours that snarled traffic on U.S. Highway 17 and Kingsley Avenue for more than an hour.

• Black Creek Mountain Bike Trail opens in Green Cove Springs at Black Creek Park off U.S. Highway 17, north of the Black Creek bridge.

• Still reeling from Hurricane Irma, Town Commissioners in Orange Park said they can’t afford to commission a study from an engineering agency to understand how it can better prepare for another 100-year storm.

10 years ago, 2014

• Clay County School Board candidate Sandra Dunnavant files a lawsuit against the Clay Family Policy Forum Inc. for defamation and emotional distress while disseminating its 2014 School Board Survey.

• Not only were 100 gopher tortoises protected, but a redesigned water conservation project between the Clay County Utility Authority and the St. Johns River Water Management District will save more than $3.1 in costs.

• Oakleaf High beats Atlantic Coast, 16-14, on a 42-yard Jordan Johnson-to-Darius Perry Hail Mary touchdown pass on the final play.

20 years ago, 2004

• Matthew Robert Dombroski, 17, was charged with murder during the commission of a felony and attempted armed robbery in connection with a home invasion robbery on Blairmore Avenue in Orange Park after one of his two accomplices was killed by one of the residents.

• The Clay County School Board unveiled a plan to pay for a new elementary on Fleming Island and make capital improvements and nine other district schools.

30 years ago, 1994

• The school district holds public hearings after announcing plans to rezone boundaries for its junior high schools to accommodate the opening of its newest school in Lake Asbury.

• The Orange Park Police Department was on the lookout for four men accused of holding up a man at the RaceTrac on Park Avenue and taking his wallet and a six-pack of beer.

40 years ago, 1984

• The school board passed a $58.9 million budget with a 7.279 millage rate – an $8 million increase compared to 1983 to help pay for the construction of a new middle school near Ridgeview Elementary.

• The Orange Park Town Council gets 26 resumes for its police chief vacancy.

• Residents prepare for the Middleburg/Clay Hill Library opening at 2245 Aster Ave. in Middleburg after operating temporarily in a 100-year-old house on Main Street across the street from Middleburg Elementary.
