School Superintendent Charlie Van Zant Jr. said he will continue to fight for additional school funding on his own after a 75-minute special school board meeting ended with members denying a request to spend $10,000 on a lobbyist.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement launched an investigation into the death of Daniel Joseph Linsinbigler, 19, of Orange Park, after he was found unconscious in the Clay County Jail.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said they believed more victims would come forward after the arrest of William A. Filancia, 43, of Middleburg, who was charged with using sexually explicit photographs to extort sex acts from another man.

Florida Highway Patrol said Janice Faye Smith of Green Cove Springs was killed a tractor-trailer rig as she walked northbound along U.S. Highway 17, about two-and-a-half miles north of the city.
