GREEN COVE SPRINGS – It didn’t take long to be corrected last Saturday at the Par on Disc Golf R.V.Z. Fall Fling Driven by Innova at Ronnie Van Zant Park. It’s disc golf, not Frisbee golf. And it’s becoming a serious sport, governed by the Professional Disc Golf Association.

Like regular golf, the round is played with more than one disc. In fact, most carry the same number of flying discs as a golfer has clubs.

“I have a couple I use for putting, a couple I use for short shots and a couple I use for long drives,” said Michigan’s Chad Scruggs, who competed in the Advanced division.

In addition to a bag of discs, some players used caddies during the 36-hole tournament.

The two 18-hole courses are carved through the pristine park, weaving a 10,377-foot trail between the timber-tall pines, low oaks and wide-open fields. Breaking par requires shots that curve around trees and avoid low-hanging branches.

The tournament attracted 130 players and was played on two 18-hole courses – the Front and Rattlesnake. Par for both courses was 54.

The winners were: Nicholas Masters (44-48) in the Open division; Joe Checorski (52-47) in Pro-40; Joey Van Duzee (51-48) in Pro-50; Ryan Perkins (48-50) in Advanced; Christopher Adams (54-51) in Amateur-40; Ben Champion (53-54) in Amateur-50; Mangus Smith (52-55) in Intermediate; John Stephens Jr. (53-52) in Recreational; Diana Parisi (60-57) in Advanced Women; Erin Fitzpatrick (66-62) in Amateur-40; Sarah Hibbs (64-63) in Intermediate Women; and, Giana McKnight (72-69) in Recreational Women.

Masters, of Jacksonville, pocketed $300 for his victory, while Evan Gurthie, of Gainesville, earned $190 for finishing second. Masters now has $8,139 in winnings this year and more than $21,000 in career earnings.
