GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The City of Green Cove Springs, in partnership with Audacious Women and the Friends of Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center, is honored to announce a special screening of the documentary “Searching for Augusta Savage,” commemorating the life and legacy of the celebrated sculptor.

The screening will be on Aug. 3, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at City Hall, 321 Walnut St.

“Searching for Augusta Savage,” which premiered on the award-winning PBS series “American Masters Shorts,” delves into the extraordinary journey of Augusta Savage, a trailblazing artist from Green Cove Springs who became one of the most influential figures of the Harlem Renaissance. The documentary, directed by Charlotte Mangin and Sandy Rattley, features rare archival footage, interviews with art historians and a comprehensive look at Savage’s groundbreaking work and enduring impact on the art world.

The event is free, and after the viewing, filmmakers Charlotte Mangin and Sandy Rattley will be available for a question and answer session, where they will delve into the creation of the documentary and Augusta Savage’s impact on art and culture, including why the evidence of her accomplishments appears to have been erased.

Remarks will also be provided by Henrietta Francis, President of Friends of Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center, Mayor Steven Kelley of Green Cove Springs and City Manager Steve Kennedy.

The evening will conclude with a reception featuring light refreshments.

“We are incredibly proud to host this special screening that honors one of Green Cove Springs’ most distinguished natives,” said Steve Kennedy, City Manager of Green Cove Springs. “Augusta Savage’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and profound influence, and we invite everyone to join us in celebrating her remarkable legacy.” Tickets are not required for this event, though early arrival is recommended due to limited seating.
