VERO BEACH – Keystone Heights scored the first run of their Class 5A semifinal on Tues., May 22 against West Nassau but gave up four runs in the fourth; two with a throwing error, to end their season with a 4-1 loss to the Warriors in Vero Beach.
With the game moved from an 8:30 a.m. start to 2:20 p.m. and a 90 minute rain delay in the sixth inning, Keystone Heights ends their season at 20-11 under coach Jessica Marquart.
In the first inning, a single from Ashleigh Jennings and sacrifice bunt from Ashton Ludwig set up Bailey Story’s run scoring single to put the Lady Indians on top quickly.
In the bottom of the first inning, though, West Nassau got stung with two flyballs off pitcher Megan Moncrief; one with a sprinting snag in centerfield from Jennings and a grounder to third base.
Keystone Heights batter Cami Worley was hit by West Nassau pitcher Skylar Whitty in her second inning at bat, but stayed at first after a groundout to Northway.
In the bottom of the second, West Nassau tagged Moncrief with two run-scoring singles on top of two walks to load the bases and score four runs total.
Keystone Heights got just one run-scoring threat with Northway reaching on a sharp grounder to third and stealing second, but she remained there with Jennings flying out. West Nassau is now set to play the winner of Hardee vs. Coral Springs Charter, scheduled for 8:30 a.m., Wed., May 23. Clay, originally set to go in the Class 6A semifinal against Land O’Lakes at 4 p.m. was possibly reset to go at 7:05 p.m. with the Class 1A championship game also on tap for Tuesday night. The other Class 6A semifinal; Lake Wales vs. American Heritage (Plantation) was tentatively scheduled for 9:35 p.m. on Tues., May 22.
FHSAA officials were monitoring weather all day Tuesday with rain causing more field condition problems as the day progressed.
Oakleaf, in a Class 8A semifinal against Lakewood Ranch that was originally set for 7 p.m. Tues., May 22, was reset for 10 a.m. on Wed., May 23. Oakleaf is the defending 8A champions under coach Christina Thompson.
