ORANGE PARK – More than 150 St. Johns River State College students and employees gathered recently to launch a new community service project, “Vikings Days of Service.” Teams participated in 19 different projects across the College’s service district, including eight locations in Clay County. The initiative includes two service dates each year: Vikings Fall into Service (held in September) and Vikings Spring into Service (to be held in January).
Melanie Brown, SJR State’s vice president for academic affairs, said she is proud to work with such enthusiastic colleagues who are committed not only to the students’ education, but also to supporting the needs of the communities the College serves. “The reason St. Johns River State College is so special is because of the dedication of our faculty and staff to our students and our communities,” Brown said.
Service projects in Clay County included The Clothes Closet and Food Pantry of Orange Park, the Clay County Animal Services, Hunger Fight, Clay County Habitat for Humanity, Wilkinson Junior High.
The planning committee is calling for proposals for January’s Vikings Spring into Service through Sunday, Oct. 13. SJR State will consider service projects by organizations and agencies operating within the College’s service district. Such entities may include: chambers of commerce; charitable organizations; civic organizations; cultural centers (libraries, museums, parks); educational organizations; faith-based organizations; healthcare organizations (hospitals, hospices, community health centers); and other service organizations.
Applications will be accepted online at: https://survey.sjrstate.edu/classclimate/online.php?p=DoS2020.
