GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The Clay County School District has named its selections for the “Clay All-County Coaches Golf Teams. During the year, coaches for each sport will select the 1st Team, 2nd Team, and Honorable Mention. Head coaches will select the criteria for the teams and either vote or submit scores or times for the selections. Golf takes place during the fall season in Florida.

On the boys’ “1st Team” selections, Cody Carroll of MHS led the county with a 34.6 stroke average. Carroll won several championships during his senior year, most notably the District and Regional and finished tied for 7 in the state finals. The senior golfer also shot 63 in the conference championship, the lowest round in FHSAA history. Middleburg High School golf coach, Scott Thomas said about Carroll, “He is the best junior golfer I have ever seen with my own eyes.” Carroll has committed to the University of North Florida on a golf scholarship.

Another “1st Team” selection is Arden Brake from Clay High School. Brake will play golf at Florida Southern College in Lakeland after graduating. He is the Most Valuable Player of the boy’s golf team at Clay High for the third year in a row. Two years ago, he was the district tournament medalist firing a 69. Coach Rodney Lich describes Brake as “a very good teammate who helps the younger players with their games.”

Fleming Island High School has three members of their golf team – Peyton Billings, Jacob Godwin and Tyler Broadus – on the “1st Team.” Billings, a junior, averaged 36 strokes per nine holes this year. He led FIHS in average and was the “co-medalist” in the conference tournament, second overall at the county tournament and has made a verbal commitment to UNF.

Godwin improved his game during the year to move up to the No. 2 position while earning a position on the all-county tournament team. “Jacob has improved his game because he only wants to get better,” said FIHS Coach Bruce Cloud.”

Broadus, who has plans to play in college, was all-conference and on the all-county tournament team for two years running. The highlight of the year for Broadus was playing in the regional tournament with the FIHS team.

On the girls’ side, Keystone Heights High dominates the “1st Team” selections with four golfers. Camille Jackson, a ninth-grader, led the county with a 39-stroke average, followed by teammates Sloane Siebert with a 45-stroke average, Savannah Heinz with a 46-stroke average and Candace Jackson with a 46-stroke average. Rounding out the “1st Team” is Victoria Greene from MHS.

“She has played on the varsity since seventh grade and has been the district tournament medalist three consecutive years and was a state tournament individual qualifier for her 8th and 9th grade years,” said Billy Jackson, coach at KHHS, regarding Camille Jackson’s season. Her highlight of the year was when she chipped in for eagle at the district tournament on the last hole. She hopes to someday earn a golf scholarship to the University of Florida.

Camille’s sister Candace, a seventh grader, turned out to be a varsity starter in almost every match and recorded an 82 in the district tournament. When asked about her future, she said, “I plan to beat my sister Camille in golf one day.” She also enjoys playing tennis, soccer, football and her favorite subject is language arts.

Freshman Sloane Siebert of KHHS recorded an average of 45 strokes per nine holes this year. The highlight of the year for Siebert was when KHHS beat Buchholz High School of Gainesville, a larger school. Coach Jackson stated that she leads the team in driving distance and is the most powerful player on the team.

The oldest member of the KHHS team on the “1st Team” is sophomore Savannah Heinz. She has been part of the district championship team for three years and is a “seasoned veteran” according to Coach Jackson. Heinz enjoys playing golf and following her sister Taylor Heinz and her golfing future.

Rounding out the top five is Victoria Green from Middleburg High School. A current 11th grader, Greene’s favorite highlight of the year was “when our team came together to pull out a victory in the District by two strokes to be back-to-back champions.”
