CLAY COUNTY – Twelve county seniors earned scholarships totaling $15,000 from last October’s Black Creek 5k/10k.
Brylee Hawkins of Keystone Heights Senior High was awarded the top prize of $3,000 as the recipient if the Det. David White Memorial Scholarship funded by the Law Offices of Michael C. Quimby, while Clay High’s Jeremy Ferri was given $2,000.
Clay’s Brianna Jordon, Middleburg’s Haley Wadsworth, Cara Toney and Matthew Dutton, Orange Park’s Jonathan Nicholson and John Bear Jr., Oakleaf’s Alexandra Baughns and Fleming Island’s Rachel Conomea, Joshua Conomea and Aaron Tillema each were awarded $1,000.
The Black Creek Bowl Association now has given more than $75,000 in scholarships to graduating Clay County seniors in the past seven years. The top award was named after Middleburg High graduate David White, who was killed in the line of duty in Middleburg during a drug raid in 2012.

Bronco Up – High Tech Fun Meets Old-Fashioned Values at MHS
MIDDLEBURG – Spring football practice took on extra meaning as the coaches, players and parents teamed up with cheerleaders, band members, teachers and Middleburg High Principal Roger Dailey to take it up a notch for the betterment of their school. Following practice, the Broncos conducted social media live feeds showing off their Varsity Fieldhouse, weight room, renovated gym and library and the Bronco Outpost (new school store). Along the way, players and cheerleaders talked about their goals for this season and the school year ahead, all to the beat of the Marching Broncos who had the MHS hallways sounding like Friday Night lights, but broadcast live on Twitter.
Head coach Karl Smeltzer introduced the team to Guidance Counselor Dana Brock who showed the players an area of the school simply known as BGB – Broncos Give Back. A cool hangout spot tucked between the cafeteria and the gym, the BGB provides a living room style space where students can eat their lunch quietly while speaking to a friend or counselor and access other assistance if needed, like clothing, easy-to-make food, school supplies and more. These student-athletes, their coaches and the MHS Touchdown Club parents committed to helping Mrs. Brock keep the BGB stocked and organized throughout the school year. But their day wasn’t over yet.
The Broncos then rolled up their sleeves and teamed up with Media Specialists Joyce Anderson and Rhiannon Weiskopf to box up hundreds of library books. The MHS Library is slated for continued renovation and upgrades this summer, so the books had to be removed so improvements can get done. The players were happy to help. Weiskopf, also the MHS Cheer Coach, explained this overall effort. “You’ll notice on our school walls the saying Bronco Up, and this is what it is all about. We work together as a school family to get done whatever hard work needs to get done and support each other all the way. We take care of each other and are always ready to help.”
Practices continued this week as the players, cheerleaders and band members prepare for their Spring football game at Sante Fe High on Thursday.
