GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Clay High quarterback Ciara Zino made her presence known on both sides of the line of scrimmage with a handful of passing scores and also an interception with wideout Makenzie Salinas having a career passcatching day as the Blue Devils trounced visiting Terry Parker High 33-0 in their Class 1A region playoff flag football opener.

Clay, ranked eighth statewide at 12-0, will stay home with a Monday second round clash with fourth-ranked Godby High (13-1) at 7pm.

Statewide, Class 1A Tampa Robinson (14-0) and the defending Class 1A champions, holds strong at number one with 2A-Riverview (13-1) and 2A-Park Vista (14-0) at two and three. Robinson beat Clay in last year’s state semifinal.

Down at Wekiva High (10-4, lost in state semifinal last year to eventual champion Alonzo) in the Orlando area, Fleming Island quarterback Hope Rozier ran for one score then hit wideouts Madison Mas and Ansley Bilyeu for scores as the Golden Eagles (9-2), in Class 2A, knocked off the 21st-statewide ranked Mustangs 19-6 to advance. Fleming Island, who hosted Martin County on Mon., May 6, was unranked statewide last week and ranked 17th in Class 2A prior to the playoffs.

Note: Clay won 18-13 over Godby on Monday to advance to the Class 1A semifinal while Fleming Island lost their 2A playoff 18-12 in double overtime to Martin County.

At Clay High, Zino and pals immediately took command against Terry Parker with three straight pass completions after an opening toss to Abby Hawkins and a drop by wide open speedster Skye Paradise. Zino hit Paolo Jorge-Silva in a crowd for a gain on 12, Salinas for a nine yarder, Paradise for 14 to set up a three yard scoring toss to Salinas on an out pattern at 6:24 of the first period.

Terry Parker had just three downs to operate with an incomplete and fumbled pitch as a result of heavy pressure from Brooklyn McClain and Hannah Agee on the defensive rush.

A 24 pass play from Zino to Alexis Stilianou got Zino a three yard run score with 1:44 left in the first before Zino snared an interception on a post pattern that got a touchdown toss to Stilianou on the first play of the second quarter.

More shutdown defense; this time from Jenna Hill, set up a Zino to Paradise scoring pass from 13 yards out to push the score to 27-0.

Salinas stepped on the back line of the end zone to prevent a quick 34-0 score before the half, but Zino found Salinas in the third period to get the score to the final 33-0.

For Fleming Island, Rozier hit Bilyeu from four yards out to put the Golden Eagles up 6-0 at the end of the first quarter before adding to the total with a 12 yarder to Mas with 4:30 left in the half. Mas would snag an interception to end the half.

“We made a few little changes but overall just executing really well on offense taking what defense gives probably averaging about six yards a play in playoffs,” said Fleming Island coach Clint Lyons.

In the third, Wekiva would score off a 41 yard scamper to cut the lead to 12-6, but Rozier rumbled in from three yards to up the score as the third quarter ended.

Wekiva would get to the goal line wiht five minutes left in the game, but failed on fourth down. Wekiva got an apparent touchdown catch late in the fourth but the receiver was ruled ineligible to end the game.

Against Martin County on Monday, Fleming Island got a touchdown run from Madison Mas and a scoring pass from Ashlyn Byrd to Hope Rozier, but let Martin County score off a 60 yard run to finish regulation time 6-6. Both teams scored in the first overtime and failed on the PAT. In the second overtime, Martin County stopped Fleming Island on fourth and one at the goal line before scoring off a left side run play for the win.
