AUBURN, AL – Ridgeview High sophomore Matthew Rodriguez continued his onslaught of wrestling with nine pins en route to a tournament title at the Swede Umbach Invitational in Auburn (AL) on Sat., Dec. 8.

Rodriguez ran the table at 106 where he was third in Class 2A last year as a freshman as teammate Gabriel Guzman, a state qualifier, almost kept pace with seven pins in 10 matches to win the 113 pounds division.

Ridgeview, the lone Florida school among Alabama powerhouses, finished 10th in team points with 248.5 points with top team Wetumpka (13th in class 6A) punching up 486 points for the tournament title. Smiths Station High of Alabama (11th in class 7A) was second with 436.5 with Auburn High (10th in class 7A) third at 378.5 in a show of state wrestling prowess.

Rodriguez matched up with state qualifier Xander McWilliams of Wetumpka in his final and won by pin at 3:23.

Guzman won by pin in his final against Conner Prins of Smiths Station.

Also medaling for Ridgeview were Reed Propes (7-2) fourth at 152 with six pins and Odijuan Whitfield at 220 (6-3) with a sixth place finish with five pins.
