Robinson, Richard power Fleming Island past Oakleaf

OAKLEAF - Seven scoring shots each from outside hitters Emma Richard and Jasmine Robinson stamped out a 3-0 win for Fleming Island volleyball over Oakleaf High on Thurs., Aug. 29 at Oakleaf High School.
"Emma is like our secret weapon with her left hand spike," said Robinson. "It's harder to block that shot."
The win was the second for Fleming Island with an equally dominating 3-0 win over Pedro Menendez a week prior with coach Amy Walker seeing some maturity across her lineup.
"We got the first two games pretty quickly; 25-10, 25-9, but I think the girls let up on the gas in game three and had to regroup," said Walker. "We were able to hold off a strong effort by Oakleaf in game three to win 25-17 in that one."
With setter Kailey DePaula handling the spying duties and creating scoring opportunities for her two main hitters, plus Maya Walker as a third scoring threat, Fleming Island ran off the first two game behind an unrelenting defensive effort from libero Jangelyz Ramirez who registered 16 digs with Walker leading the team with 18.
"We communicate a lot better this year and Kailey sees the whole front court," said Robinson, who has been thrust into the lead hitter role with a summer injury to Rayna Durden sidelining the high-flyer thus far. "She sees the whole court and directs us to where the defense is able to be hit."
One ironic twist in game three's action was a scoring kill shot from Ramirez, a 5'-5" frame on the defensive back line and a diving save dig opportunity from Robinson that staved off an Oakleaf scoring surge.
"When we are all on the same page, we just cover the floor," said Ramirez. "The whole team is more consistent this year on each point."
In the first game, Robinson opened the scoring with a thunderous block of a kill attempt from Oakleaf's Bryanna Parrett that put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 en route to a 7-2 scoring surge with DePaula masterfully giving her three flamethrowers ample air time to do scoring damage.
Parrett and teammate Jalana Hope continued to test the block schemes of Fleming Island with a surge to a 12-9 scoring putting Fleming Island a bit on their heels.
From there, though, Depaula started a 20 minute scoring barrage off serves and sets that saw Fleming Island overwhelm above the net to the 25-10 win.
Game two saw Fleming Island shoot themselves in the foot early and fall back 3-0 before Walker regrouped her troops. Richard and Robinson started to find their sweet spots and the Golden Eagles upped the score to 17-8 with Robinson, Mollie Lawrence and Walker handling serve duties that put the Lady Knights back line off center and with minor mistakes adding the Fleming Island surge.
"We had to tighten up in the second game and push to the third," said Robinson.
Walker added a series of floating, soft arches on her serve that seemed to befuddle the Oakleaf defense to finish off the 25-9 final score.
In game three, Oakleaf coach Jennifer Meyer got some bounces on her side of the court with Parrett finding her mark and libero Arianna Vera able to get her bumps to center court for better target range on the Knights' offense. Oakleaf stayed within arms length with an 18-17 late score, but Fleming Island dusted off the offense behind a Ramirez spike that caught Oakleaf defender Emma Parker off guard befoe putting the game away with Robinson and Richard bombing away and Robinson nailing her diving save to set up the final point; 25-17.
In other area action, Middleburg (1-3), off a 3-1 loss to 8A-power Spruce Creek last week, got no relief on their schedule with Episcopal winning 3-1 on Wed., Aug. 27 and Tallahassee Leon visiting on Thurs., Aug. 29 and winning a 3-0 decision.
Keystone Heights lost a 3-0 decision to Branford with two games going to overtime; 26-24, 25-18 and 27-25 in the decider. 1A-Branford middle hitter Lachelle Sikes, at 6'-1", had 11 kills. Branford improves to 5-1, Keystone Heights falls to 1-1.
Ridgeview High bounced back from a tough 3-2 loss to Creekside to bounce Bolles 3-0 on Thurs., Aug. 29 to improve to 3-2 overall.
For Orange Park, the Lady Raiders got wins over First Coast and Palatka (both 3-0) before losing a tough 3-2 match to St. Johns Country Day School to go to 3-3 overall. Three Raiders have 47 scoring shots apiece; Lauren Ellis, Roxy Palii and Sidney Breu to lead the Orange Park scoring. Macie Faucett, libero, has 56 digs with Ellis at 51.
St. Johns Country Day School's win over Orange Park came from nine kills from Maddy Moody and 27 digs from Kate Jacobs. Gracie Arnett had 21 assists for score with Emma Gonzales getting five serve aces. The Lady Spartans improved to 2-4 overall.
At Clay, senior hitter Mackenzie Wright blasted 10 kills as the Blue Devils beat Terry Parker 3-0 in their season opener; 25-19, 25-15, 25-14. Wright also led Clay with 13 digs on defense.
