Ridgeview explodes for 42 points in 24 minutes

ORANGE PARK – Ridgeview High head football coach Cameron Porch is entering his third spring as head coach of the Ridgeview Panthers and the progress he has made with the football program is nothing short of amazing.

Note: The program has gone from 0-10 in 2016 to 6-4 last season just falling short of a playoff birth. In his first spring in 2016, the Panthers scored as many times as I did dating in high school: ZERO.

“We expected to win today and we know it’s just the beginning of a lot of hard work this summer,” said Porch. “Our players have done a tremendous job so far of sharing the load of accountability with our coaches.”

In Friday’s spring game against Daytona Beach Seabreeze, the Panthers scored 42 points in just over a half of football in a 42-10 blowout of the visiting Sandcrabs.

It took one offensive play to show the returning speed of Ridgeview multi talented running backs corp as Denali Lindo would run 75 yards for a touchdown to open the spring game that ended up being more track meet than football at times.

“Day and night from when we first took over the program,” said Porch. “We have had great off seasons as far as working hard and our strength gains have been tremendous with our players having fun but working hard at the same time.”

It is safe to say this season’s veteran Panthers team will look to not only make the playoffs but vie for a trip to Camping World Stadium in Orlando in early December.

Senior quarterback Tyler Huff made his presence know on the next possession with a 45 yard run to the Seabreeze 20 yard line after faking out not only the Seabreeze Sandcrabs but also most of the fans on an quarterback fake handoff. Huff would then find senior Jaiden Turner on a five yard pass for a quick 14-0 lead with 3:38 left in the first quarter.

“Myself and the other team leaders will make sure all our teammates are at our summer workouts because that is really what helped us last season improve so much,” said Huff, who finished with eight of eight passes for 114 yards, 3TDs with four carries for 82 yards and one score. “Minimum of eight wins and playoffs; that’s what we want.”

The offense continued to click on all cylinders on their next possession as Huff would throw his second touchdown pass of the game with a three yard pass to wide receiver Isaac Chaffin on the final play of the first quarter for a 21-0 advantage.

Not to be overshadowed by the high octane offense, the Panther defense would get a takeaway on an interception by free safety Glen Miller to give Ridgeview the ball back near midfield.

A 43 yard run by Turner to the five yard line helped set another touchdown pass from Huff this time to running back Brian Jackson for the 28-0 lead.

Seabreeze would finally get on the board with a late field goal just inside of one minute left in the half. Ridgeview would keep their foot on the gas pedal with a 45 yard pass to Jackson to the Sandcrabs 22 yard line. On the next play a 21 yard pass to Chaffin down to the one yard line set up Huff to call his own number on a quarterback sneak to give Ridgeview their fifth touchdown of the half and a 35-3 halftime lead with five different players scoring.

On the first play of the third quarter, running back Rolondo Grey would take the first play 75 yards to increase the lead to 42-3. The junior varsity Panthers would take over the game and get some much needed experience for a team with big plans for 2018.
