Raiders offense explodes on Nease

ORANGE PARK – Bishop Kenny got a glimpse of the speed of the Orange Park High football team with Terrance Johnson high-stepping to a kickoff return touchdown to open the game and the Nease High Panthers felt the wrath of Johnson Friday in a 35-7 non-district Raider win Friday night in Hoyt B. Cotney Stadium.

“We saw what we needed to do to compete after the Oakleaf game and I think the kids are now buying into the practice effort,” said Orange Park coach Tom Macpherson. “It’s tough to get kids to buy in when success doesn’t come. We had issues that were fixed last week and the win against Nease helps kids to buy in. This game was a big positive for us.”

Johnson, a senior who has been in just about every offensive ball position for Macpherson over the past two years; quarterback, slot back, wide receiver and even running back, blasted a nine yard scoring run to open the scoring in the first quarter against Nease after the Raiders drove 55 yards; 20 yards on an Alex Moore run, on their first drive.

Just two minutes later, still in the first quarter, junior quarterback Vinny Walker found Johnson with a 45 yard scoring pass that upped the score to 12-0 with nearly six minutes still to go in the first quarter.

“Terrance was a leader on the field last year and is becoming a team leader this year,” said Macpherson. “Vinny is doing the things we want him to do.”

Walker finished with 198 yards passing on seven of 12 passes. Johnson finished with 111 yards of offense with three scores; two pass, one run.

Walker found wide out Umar Young on a 72 yard scoring pass as the Raiders looked to light up the scoreboard on the visiting Panthers.

A turnover on downs behind stout defensive efforts from Alex Moore and Kendy Charles, who racked back-to-back sacks on one Nease series worth a loss of 25 yards, put Johnson back in the end zone on a one yard plunge that gave the Raiders a 25-0 halftime edge.

With the time nearly off the clock as the halftime break approached, defensive back Isiah Blair almost put another six on the board with an end zone interception that he got to the Nease 40 before getting knocked down with no time on the clock.

“Isiah had a great night with two pass breakups and the pick,” said Macpherson. Orange Park kept the pedal on the gas through the second half, but could muster just a three yard scoring run from senior Robbie Reynolds and a field goal to put the score to 35-0 before Nease got a touchdown inside the two minute mark.
