A routine traffic stop on Wells Road resulted last Thursday, May 30, in the seizure of seven bags of marijuana weighing 21 pounds, with a street value of $21,000. A Clay County Sheriff deputy stopped the car after it failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection of Papaya West and Olive Court. The car was pulled over in the 1400 block of Wells Road.
Deputies worked in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service during the stop. A drug-sniffing dog alerted deputies to the marijuana in the trunk.
According to CCSO, “This isn’t marijuana being used for medicinal purposes, distributed by a licensed professional. This is product illegally shipped and packaged to be sold on the street – at the hands of criminals.”

Man with mobile home tag on his car busted for DUI

MIDDLEBURG – A man was stopped while driving with a license tag from a mobile home, and he wound up going to jail for driving while intoxicated and endangering a child.
John Amick McBane, 54, of Middleburg was stopped on County Road 218 Wednesday, May 29, after a routine check of his tag was supposed to be on a mobile home and didn’t match his car. Deputies also learned the car hadn’t been registered since 2009 and McBane’s license had been suspended three times since 2005.
McBane’s blood alcohol level was measured at .135 and .137. The legal limit is .08.
Since a child was riding in his car, he also was charged with endangering her.

Middleburg man charged with ‘torturing’ three dogs

MIDDLEBURG – Clay County Sheriff deputies arrested a man after they found two starving dogs and a dead dog left abandoned at a home.
Douglas William Swagerty, 26, of Middleburg was charged with three counts of torture to an animal with intent to inflict intense pain after deputies found the dogs living in filth, heat and without food or water.
Deputies were called to a house on Oregon Trail after neighbors noticed two dogs that appeared to be abandoned. They found a beagle tied to a tree with a 12-foot rope in front of the house and an emaciated pit bull inside. With temperatures reaching 100 degrees last week, both were in extremely poor condition, according to the arrest report. An animal control officer ranked both dogs as a one or two out of 10 on the Purina Body Scale.
Another pit bull was found locked inside a bedroom. It apparently had been dead for days.
Swagerty surrender custody of the two living dogs to the Clay Humane Society, while the dead dog was taken by animal control for an autopsy.

Disruptive man tased three times during arrest

ORANGE PARK – An unruly man had to be tased three times while he fought with two Clay County Sheriff Deputies on Thursday, May 30.
Deputies were called to investigate a suspicious person on Uranus Lane. They found Parrish William Samford, 25, of Orange Park, standing in the middle of the road. He refused to identify himself and tried to walk away when a second deputy arrived. Samford kicked one of the officers and wrestled with both deputies before he was tased three times, according to the arrest report.
Samford was charged with resisting, obstructing and opposing a police officer.

Jacksonville man nabbed after bragging about stealing gun

ORANGE PARK – A man made it easier on Clay County Sheriff deputies by telling friends he stolen a gun from a car parked May 12 at the Orange Park Mall.
Sean Lee Davis, 41, of Jacksonville, was arrested for armed burglary and possession of a loaded firearm by a convicted felon after deputies received a tip that Davis was bragging about the gun.
According to the arrest warrant, Davis broke into a car at the AMC Theatres and reportedly stole a .45 caliber handgun.
Davis was arrested on Thursday, May 30. His bond was set at $100,006.

Inmate caught with marijuana in Clay County Jail

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Jacksonville man’s problems worsened when he was caught with marijuana inside the Clay County Jail.
Allen Tarrell DeWayne Brooks, 41, already was in jail after being arrested on May 28 for grand theft. A day later, a correction’s officer noticed Brooks trying to hide a something in his mouth. He eventually spit out a cellophane wrapper that contained what later was tested to be marijuana.
Deputies then added an additional charge – introduction of contraband into a detention center.

Woman jailed for taking cash, exploiting unmindful victim

ORANGE PARK – Tanya Lynn Garman, 49, recently was arrested for cashing checks and using credit cards from a victim who eventually was placed into an assisted living home.
The Orange Park woman is accused to writing checks from Jan. 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019, totaling $64,750 to herself from the victim’s account and not paying the victim back. She’s also charged with using his credit card without paying the bill.
She was charged with grand theft and exploitation and ordered to not have any contact with the victim.
Her bond was set at $50,003.

Woman arrested after deputies find elderly woman with injuries

ORANGE PARK – A woman was taken to the Clay County Jail Sunday, June 2, after deputies found an elderly woman with scratches on her arm and soreness in her upper body.
Salena Kay Fox, 39, of Orange Park was charged with battery on a person 65 years or older and resisting arrest.
Fox attempted to break away from deputies as they were placing her in handcuffs, forcing one deputy on hold her on the ground until backup arrived, according to the arrest report.

Bingo hall break-in winds up with Jacksonville man tased, jailed

ORANGE PARK – Orange Park Police caught a man they believed was breaking into the Outreach of America Bingo on Saturday, June 1, through an air conditioning vent.
Alex Leland Risley, 29, of Jacksonville, was arrested and charged with burglary with damage of at least $1,000, resisting arrest, two counts of providing a false identification and possession of burglary tools.
Risley apparently tried to run from police when they approached him at the business at 234 Industrial Loop East. The suspect was caught after an OPPD officer used his Taser to subdue him. After he was in custody, they found more than $5,000 damage to the air conditioner, ducts and vents, as well as drywall. They also found a tool bag.
Risley was placed into the Clay County Jail with bond set at $167,512.

Third of three home invasion suspects now behind bars

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The third, and final, person wanted for the May 19 armed home invasion was arrested near Tallahassee and transported back to the Clay County Jail.
Bobby DeShawn Dunbar, 20, of Jacksonville, was being held without bond while facing charges of home invasion with a firearm or other deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, grand theft of $100,000 or more, false imprisonment and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Dunbar was one of three people who stormed into an Oakleaf home, overpowered the homeowner, bound him with zip-ties and telephone cords, threatened him by putting a gun in his mouth and pepper-spraying him until he directed them to $140,000 that was hidden in his attic.
Skylar Marin Albritton, 19, of Jacksonville, was arrested on May 21 after deputies tracked her down when she contacted the victim’s wife on Instagram. Juwan Denzel Grier, 25, of Jacksonville, was arrested on May 22. They were charged with an armed home invasion, grand theft of more than $100,00, false imprisonment and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
