Man killed in solo truck crash

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A 30-year-old Silver Springs, Florida man is dead following a one-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 17 near the intersection of Worth Way, south of Green Cove Springs.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Kyle Sheffield was driving a 2001 Mazda B2500 pickup heading southbound at 4:50 p.m. when the crash occurred Feb. 20.
FHP said Sheffield’s vehicle, “for reasons unknown,” steered to the left and traveled onto the median and overturned.
The truck traveled across the southbound lanes and came to final rest upward facing in a westerly direction. FHP said Sheffield was ejected and came to final rest south west of his truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drinking binge ends in truck theft
ORANGE PARK – An Orange Park man was arrested after allegedly stealing another man’s truck from the VFW building on Aurora Boulevard near Orange Park.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Richard Kendall Hobbs, 31, on Feb. 16 at his home after finding the stolen vehicle outside his residence.
The victim had left the truck unlocked with the keys under the seat before entering the VFW. When he tried to leave the club, the truck was stolen and, thanks to a friend of the victim, the truck was spotted outside Hobbs’ home. Deputies arrived at the home and found Hobbs smelling of alcohol sitting on his couch next to the truck’s keys.
Police arrested Hobbs and transported him to the Clay County Jail where he faces a felony for grand theft auto and is being held on about $25,000 bond. He is set to appear in court on March 28.

Broken plate used as weapon in bloody brawl
MIDDLEBURG – A Middleburg man was arrested Saturday after allegedly assaulting another man with a plate.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Edwin Earl Jefferson, 32, on Feb. 17 after responding to a domestic disturbance call.
According to the report, Jefferson was in the second floor of the home punching holes in doors and breaking things when the victim, his stepfather, tried to make him stop. Jefferson then threatened the man with a shotgun and proceeded to break a plate on his face. Police said Jefferson then began using the broken plate as a weapon.
Deputies arrived to find blood throughout the house, severe cuts on the victim’s face, and Jefferson with blood-soaked hands. He was arrested and transported to the Clay County Jail.
Jefferson faces felonies for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery. He is being held on about $85,000 bond and is set to appear in court on March 28.

Knife used in alcohol-laden fight
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A man was arrested Sunday after allegedly drunkenly threatening two other people with a knife outside their homes in Green Cove Springs.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Clifford Dave Wetherington, 45, on Feb. 18 after receiving a call that Wetherington was causing a disturbance.
Wetherington was arguing with two victims while all three were under the influence of alcohol. A neighbor came over to tell them to quiet down and tried helping one of the victims to his home as he had passed out in the yard.
Police said Wetherington then began threatening the man and removed his shirt for a fist fight. The man took a shovel that the passed out man was using as a crutch and told Wetherington to stay back. Wetherington then went inside and got a knife, threatening all three victims when the neighbor called the police. Witnesses in the area confirmed the story and Wetherington was arrested and transported to the Clay County Jail.
Wetherington faces two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on about $20,000 bond. He is set to appear in court on March 28.

Child pornography charges for Middleburg man
MIDDLEBURG – A Middleburg man faces 10 counts of child pornography possession following an investigation carried out this morning by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
Working along with the Department of Homeland Security, deputies arrested Rodney Thomas Ternovsky, 40, and seized various electronics devices such as flash drives where stored the illicit material. Officers served Ternovsky with a search warrant at his Ibis Drive home at 9:20 a.m. on Feb. 15.
According to the police report, Ternovsky stored the flash drives in a locked box he had locked inside a larger locked safe. Police said the flash drive contained both videos and still images of child pornography.
“Numerous files were of prepubescent female children being sexually exploited some of which show the children being sexually battered by men,” states the CCSO report.
Ternovsky’s officially charged with 10 second-degree felony counts of possession of photographs depicting the sexual performance of a child. At the writing of this report, Ternovsky remains in the Clay County Jail without bond.

Break-in ends in arrest
MIDDLEBURG – Bond is set at $37,509 for a 40-year-old Middleburg man charged with breaking into a home and stealing some $8,000 in valuables from the homeowner.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Kevin J. Bayless of Mallard Road on Feb. 14 after conducting an investigation that led them to a number of pawn shops in Jacksonville.
According to the police report, Bayless broke into a home in the 4000 block of Wheat Court and stole a large amount of gold jewelry, a box containing multiple watches of various makes and a wallet containing credit cards valued at more than $8,000.
Police said the victim reported the break-in on Feb. 5. Detectives interviewed Bayless on Feb. 14 at his home and then brought him to the Orange Park area CCSO sub-station for further questioning.
Bayless is charged with one lesser grand theft charge and a charge of burglary as well. At press time, he remained in the Clay County Jail.
