Traffic stop ends in meth charge, more
ORANGE PARK – An Orange Park man has been arrested after being found in possession of a stolen vehicle and a number of illegal drugs.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Alan Paul Verde, 49, on Jan. 16 after finding him in possession of a stolen vehicle and a bag of drugs.
According to the CCSO report, officers discovered the vehicle, which had been reported stolen in late December, at a property along Blanding Boulevard. After questioning the women in the vehicle officers determined that Verde was in possession of the stolen car and searched the car. During their search, they found a bag containing 1.3 grams of heroin, 3.8 grams of methamphetamine and a variety of prescription opiates. Verde was arrested and transported to the Clay County Jail.
Verde faces four felonies, one for grand theft auto and three for drug possession. His bail is set at just over $40,000 and he was set to appear in court Wednesday morning.

Couple arrested for child abuse
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Two people have been accused of neglect and abuse on a child after punishing allegedly the girl with a spicy condiment.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Erik Christopher Barfield, 38, and Jennifer Michelle Karneol, 31, who was already in the Clay County Jail, on Thursday, January 11 after interviewing both people at the jail.
The initial complaint came through in September when the victim in the case was interviewed by a representative from the Florida Department of Children and Families. During the interview, the victim said that Barfield would pull her head back and put wasabi sauce into her mouth when she was “bad.”
The victim also told the interviewer that the sauce was too spicy and burned her mouth, making it bleed on a few occasions. Officers interviewed and arrested Barfield at the jail, and later interviewed Karneol who had been arrested for driving without a license, drug possession charges and petit theft and was being held in the jail.
In addition to her existing charges, Karneol will now face an additional felony charge for child neglect, and Barfield will face a felony for child abuse. Karneol does not have the option for bond and will appear in court on Feb. 14, with Barfield’s bond being set at $20,000 including amounts from additional charges against him, he will also appear in court on Feb. 14.


Child neglect charge for Orange Park woman
ORANGE PARK – An Orange Park woman was arrested on a warrant for child neglect.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Christina Leann McCain, 36, on Jan. 9 on a warrant issued for her arrest back in December.
According to the report, McCain was discovered to have allowed a small child to leave her residence unattended on at least three separate occasions. Upon being questioned McCain blamed the incidents on a foot injury that left her partially immobile.
Following her arrest, she was transported to the Clay County Jail and faces a felony for child neglect without great bodily harm. McCain has been released from the jail since her arrest.

Green Cove man charged with sexual molestation
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A Green Cove Springs man has been arrested after allegedly molesting female victims in his home.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Hector Vincente Hernaz Gomez, 52, on Jan. 9 after he was reported by one of the victims.
According to the report, Gomez committed various acts of sexual violence against two young female victims including kissing them on the mouth with tongue and touching them inappropriately. One of the victims called in the crimes on Dec. 23, and Gomez was invited to the sheriff’s office for an interview before being taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Gomez was booked into Clay County Jail and faces two felonies for sexual battery on a victim younger than 12 by a person older than 18 and molesting a victim less than 12 by a person older than 18. He is being held on $100,000 for the second felony, but was not given the option for bond as a result of the sexual battery charge and is set to appear in court Wednesday morning.
