Three more arrested for Nov. 21 Keystone Heights beating death
KEYSTONE HEIGHTS – Two more men were arrested on murder charges in connection with the Nov. 21 beating death of a man who was killed in an apparent jealous rage.
Travis Joseph Roe, 41, of Keystone Heights, Caleb Evertte Roe, 22, of Starke, and Augustine Morales, 28, of Keystone Heights were charged with second degree murder. They join Kalvin Wayne Roe, 39, and Jesse Edwin Roe, 23, both of Keystone Heights, who were arrested in connection with a group attack on Steven D. Perry that included pool cues, baseball bats and axe handles, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Morales also was charged with tampering with evidence for helping to dump the body near the Putnam County line.
Kalvin Roe is charged with second-degree murder, while Jesse Roe is charged with being an accessory after the fact to dumping Perry’s body on the side of the road.
According to the arrest report, Kalvin Roe was outraged because Perry bought a pair of sneakers for the son of Roe’s girlfriend. He used text messages and social media posts to threaten Perry and to lure him to the deadly ambush when he was stopped on Bills Way on Nov. 21 by a group of men. He then was savagely beaten by the group.
Travis Roe’s bond was set at $5 million. Caleb Roe’s bond was set at $3 million. Morales was being held without bond.
Brinks employee charged with stealing from ATM machines
ORANGE PARK – A Brink’s employee was arrested on Aug. 25 for stealing $11,000 from five ATM machines in Clay County.
Travius Markel Smith, 29, of Kingsland, Georgia, was charged with six counts of grand theft.
Brinks conducted an internal investigation and realized money had been taken from several machines in the past few months. According to the arrest report, Smith stuffed the money in his pocket before returned to his armored car.
Man busted with LSD, ecstasy, cocaine during search of house
MIDDLEBURG – Surveillance by Clay County Sheriff’s Office led to the arrest of a man who now faces five drug charges, including trafficking in LSD and cocaine.
William David Bain, 41, of Middleburg, was charged with trafficking in LSD, cocaine, ecstasy and molly, phenethylamines, cocaine and marijuana.
His bond was set at $675,015.
According to the arrest report, CCSO had been watching Bain since he had an active warrant for sale and delivery of cocaine. After he drove away from his Felucca Drive home, he was stopped and arrested on Aug. 25.
Police found the drugs in his bedroom when they conducted a search warrant.
Orange Park man indicted by U.S. Attorney for armed robbery
JACKSONVILLE – U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez announces the return of an indictment charging Joshua Noah Sams, 20, of Orange Park, with interference of interstate commerce by robbery and brandishing a firearm during a robbery.
If convicted, Sams faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison for the robbery offense and a 7-year minimum mandatory penalty, up to life imprisonment, for the firearm offense. The indictment also notifies Sams the United States intends to forfeit the alleged proceeds of the robbery.
According to the indictment, on Nov. 12, 2019, Sams robbed a 76 Gas station at gunpoint, obtaining cash from the employee on duty. Sams is currently in federal custody in the Northern District of Florida on unrelated robbery and firearm charges.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein.
This is another case prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” Program, which is a nationwide, crime reduction strategy aimed at decreasing violent crime in communities.
It involves a comprehensive approach to public safety – one that includes investigating and prosecuting crimes, along with prevention and reentry efforts. In the Middle District of Florida, U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez coordinates PSN efforts in cooperation with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
Man finally caught after selling crack near two Clay County schools
ORANGE PARK – A local man was arrested for selling crack cocaine to a “confidential source” working with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office across the street from Orange Park High.
Erik John Ankney, 44, of Green Cove Springs, was arrested on Aug. 27 and charged with two counts of sale and delivery of crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school.
According to the arrest report, the source bought crack from Ankney at a fast food restaurant near Orange Park High on May 15, 2018, and the source bought more crack a day later at a strip shopping center near Fortis College.
His bond was set at $30,006.
