Panthers comeback falls short

ST. AUGUSTINE – Three touchdowns in the final six minutes of play did not get the job done as Ridgeview High fell 55-39 in district 5-5A play to Pedro Menendez High Friday night in St. Augustine.

Down 49-19 with the fourth quarter clock ticking down, Ridgeview, led by three scores from tailback Trent Coleman, rallied to within striking distance behind two scoring passes from quarterback Tyler Huff.

Menendez scored twice on long runs in the fourth quarter to keep Ridgeview at bay plus recovered an onsides kick that was turned into a 50 yard touchdown return to thwart the Panther comeback.

Ridgeview roared back despite the setback with running back Caleb Plyler scoring from 20 yards out with less than a minute to play.

Huff had a pass intercepted at the one yard line in the first quarter to prevent an early score. The pick turned into a 79 yard scoring run.

Ridgeview had four turnovers including a fumble returned for a touchdown.

Huff had scoring passes to Brian Jackson and Kiaran Turner in the second half.

In the playoff points scenario, Menendez (5-3, 2-2) and Ridgeview (6-3, 2-2) are hanging on to a possible region slot with the Panthers heading to Baker County on Friday in their final regular season game. Baker County, the district 5-5A champion via a 21-14 win over Clay on Friday, holds all the cards for Ridgeview. Menendez plays Orange Park (1-8) also in district 5-5A play. Clay plays Palatka in a must-win to stay in the playoff hunt.
