Faith walk: Our word

When you make a promise to someone, how important is it to you to keep that promise? There was a time when it was considered dishonorable to fail to keep one’s word. We spoke of people as honorable when we said, “His word is his bond.” In other words we were saying you can depend on it when that person tells you something.

Maybe I’m, wrong. But it seems to me that there are not as many of those folks around today as there were in the past.

I don’t know why this would be true. It could be that parents stopped teaching the same values that were taught in the past. Whatever all the reasons are, it is still important to keep your word!

Is not that the kind of person you want to be? I have chosen to be a person of my word. I know it is a testimony to the strength of my character. And I know that truthfulness is essential to our growing in Christ. The Psalmist had it right. He said, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalms 19:14)

Are you guilty of making promises you have not kept? Ask God to forgive you and help you to strengthen your resolve to become the person to whom this important character trait matters.

There are times in life when you promise something and things happen to make it impossible for you to fulfill something you have promised. That has happened to all of us. God understands that.

If you do not keep your promises to others, you will have difficulty keeping your promises to God.

Our faithful God ascribes to Himself this wonderful example. He says He will always keep His word. What God has said, He will do! Always! If God did not keep His promises, we would have no basis for our faith.

“His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” (Psalms 91:4 NLT) “No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said.” (Psalms 89:34 NLT)
