In the early days when public travel in the west was largely by stagecoach, a company was looking for a new driver. He was being selected as the primary driver for one of the company’s most important routes.

The transportation company decided to ask only one question in the interview process to choose their new driver.

The question was: “If you were driving on a high mountain road and driving off the edge of the road meant a long fall to tragic death, how close could you drive to the edge of the road without dropping off?”

Each prospective driver touted his ability. One said he could drive within inches of the edge without falling. Another said he had driven within one inch of the edge without falling. Still another said he had actually driven so close to the edge of such a road that one half of the wheel was over the edge without the stagecoach falling off the cliff. The competition for the new driver’s job was stiff.

The final person being interviewed for the job was asked the same question. His reply was, “I don’t know. In my coach driving experience, I have always tried to see how far I could stay away from such an edge.” He won the job!

Some people want to live as close to spiritual danger as they can. When you live too close to the spiritual dangers in life, the problem is that you may fall into that spiritual abyss that endangers your spiritual life.

Never try to see how close you can walk to the path of sin in the world. Make it your goal to stay as far away from sin and attractions of the world system as you possibly can. The further you are from such dangers, the less likely it is that you could be sucked into that life failure.

Live as close as you can to God. That will keep you from living too close to the edge of sin and failure.
