This is a story I first heard many years ago: A little boy came into the kitchen one evening while his mother was cooking supper. He handed her a piece of paper. On it he had written:

MY BILL

For mowing the grass - $3.

For making my own bed this week - $1.

For going to the store - 50 cents.

For playing with baby brother while you went shopping - 25 cents.

For taking out the trash - $1.

For getting a good report card - $5.

For raking the yard - $2.

The mother looked at the paper. Turned it over, and wrote this:

For the nine months I carried you inside my body - No Charge.

For the nights I sat up with you, doctored you, prayed for you - No Charge.

For the time, the tears and the costs through your life - No Charge.

For the nights filled with worry and dread - No Charge.

For the toys, food and clothes - No Charge.

Son, add it all up and the full cost of my love is - No Charge.

When he finished reading, he had great big tears in his eyes. And he looked up at his Mom and he said, “Mama, I sure do love you.” Then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote, PAID IN FULL.

This Mother did everything for her child for one reason – she loved him. There was no charge for her love.

God loves us. He does all things for us for no charge to us. In fact, His greatest provision and gift for us – salvation – is by grace alone.

Grace is the unearned, undeserved, unmerited favor of God. And the Bible says it is by grace alone that we are saved.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith.

And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

(Ephesians 2:8)
